MISSION

We empower Black men and youth to live healthier lives by creating affirming spaces that promote mental, physical, social, and economic wellness through healing-centered engagement.

We empower Black men and boys to define wellness on their own terms and provide access to the tools needed to thrive. We are a community-based organization that enhances wellness through culturally grounded programs, partnerships, and advocacy.

 VISION

We envision a future where Black men and youth thrive in mind, body, and spirit. In this future, Black men and youth are :

  • free from systemic barriers

  • fully connected to the community

  • guaranteed health education, access, and culturally responsive care

  • lead lives of purpose, power, and joy

  • affirmed and supported in their full humanity

  • Healing-Centered: We prioritize wellness through approaches rooted in joy, rest, connection, and cultural strength.

  • Healthy Equity: We challenge structural systems and ehalth disparities to prioritize the specific wellness needs of Black men through workshops, lifestyle support, and alternatives to wellness models.

  • Brotherhood: We foster trust, connection, and accountability among Black men across generations.

  • Community-Led: We listen to, are guided by, and are accountable to the needs of the community we serve with integrity.

  • Resilience: We build capacity and courage to thrive, adapt, and lead in the face of adversity.

  • Liberation-Focused: Our work is grounded in freedom, dignity, and collective power.

As a Black-founded and Black-led organization, the very nature of the work of BMW is culturally specific and gives the unique opportunity to build trust and discuss topics that might otherwise be uncomfortable if programs were not delivered in a culturally and linguistically appropriate format.

BMW has built and continues to strengthen deep relationships with Black men and boys in Portland through consistent presence, direct engagement, and culturally tailored programming. These relationships have been supported by showing up in familiar and accessible community spaces and facilitating healing-centered events that build connection and address trauma.
